About the Friends of the San Francisco Maritime Museum Library

The Friends are a non-profit California corporation formally cooperating with the National Park Service to advance the library collections at the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park's Maritime Research Center.
The Friends enhance the library collections by:

    • Building collections by acquiring book donations and purchasing new books;
    • Providing supplemental staffing for the Library;
    • Providing equipment and materials;
    • Sponsoring publications;
    • Promoting research in Pacific Maritime History;
    • Developing to accomplish these purposes.

Since 1982 the Library Friends have:

    • Established the Friends as a non-profit organization to benefit the Library;
    • Develped a constituency of researchers and donors interested in maritime history;
    • Established the Captain Fred Klebingat Lecture Series;
    • Purchased and donated to the Library Barbara Johnson's extensive collection on whaling;
    • Facilitated donation to the Library of Dean Mawdsley's eminent collection on World War II naval affairs;
    • Facilitated donation to the Library of Donald Reardon's impressive, wide-ranging maritime collection;
    • Developed an internet sales operation for used books which benefits the Library;
    • Funded a work-study program;
    • Developed a number of designated funds addressing specific needs of the Library and advancing maritime history;
    • Sponsored a biennial award for original maritime research.
    • Funded the construction of the Library's Reference Office.
    • Funded the acquisition of, and training for, the library's cataloging system.

Board of Directors
The Friends of the San Fancisco Maritime Museum Library is governed by a self perpetuating Board of Directors, which appoints a President, Vice-President and Treasurer from among its members.
